Plot summary
After high school, Ruby Corey went back to her father's farm in the backwoods of Braddock, North Carolina, when he needed her help. Earlier, a wealthy businessman and his wife had taken her in and taught her the manners of a lady. She has never stopped loving Boake Tackman, whose family money is long spent; his only remaining property is farmland he drained himself. Boake keeps company with Ruby but means to marry a local woman from a rich family, and when Ruby hears it, she marries Jim Gentry, the widowed benefactor who had sheltered her years before, though she does not love him. Jim's peers disdain her background, and most of them stay away from the couple's wedding party.
