Plot summary
Billy Donovan, an Arizona cowhand, arrives in a Texas town and puts on shooting exhibitions as a salesman for the Gigantic Shell Company. He is looking for the man who killed his brother-in-law and caused his sister's death. In town he meets Jean Halloran, whose Double Bar-A ranch stands near an abandoned gold mine; the Phantom has sent her written warnings to vacate it. Her stepfather, Tom Jackson, paralyzed in both legs, is the ranch's only other occupant. Billy learns that Salazar, called the town's best shot, is asking after him. He takes a job at the ranch, where the Phantom has killed the hired hands.
