Plot summary
George Spalding, a Mollyco Company employee, disappears on a flight into the interior wilderness of northern British Columbia while searching for gold. Jean Dupre, recently fired from the same company, asks George's wife Andrea whether she knows where he went. The two of them then fly north in a floatplane to look for him. Engine trouble forces repairs along the way, and a fisherman they meet warns them not to go near the headwaters. There Dupre brings the plane down hard on the water, and both survive. Nearby they meet Silas McGee, a prospector who has lived alone for decades guarding a mine, and his brother Ian.

- The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver floatplane used in Mother Lode was never meant to crash; during a glassy water landing the pilot lost control and the plane flipped over and sank. With no money left, the Hestons wrote the crash into the film.
- The floatplane that crashed for real during Mother Lode was recovered from the lake and transported to Kelowna, British Columbia, fully restored, put back on wheels and sold to an American business, which licensed it as N323RS.
