Plot summary
In the basement den of the old mansion that Sally Farnham inherits from her grandmother, she finds a fireplace walled shut with bricks. Mr. Harris, the estate's handyman, says the grandmother ordered the sealing after her husband died and that it is better left as it is. When Harris goes home, Sally takes his tools and sets to work on the bricks. They will not shift, but she works open the small side hatch for ashes, and behind it lies not a hearth but a deep, dark hollow under the house. Voices whisper her name.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Guillermo del Toro, who produced and co-wrote the 2011 remake, was heavily influenced by the film after seeing it on television as a child; he and his brothers would follow each other around the house saying "Sally, Sally", mimicking the creatures.
- The three actors playing the creatures, Felix Silla, Tamara De Treaux and Patty Maloney, were all performers with dwarfism, and were filmed on deliberately oversized sets to make the creatures look far smaller than humans.
