Plot summary
A worldwide nuclear war looks certain to Dr. Jeremiah Morley, who wants to find space beneath the Earth's surface where survivors could live. He assembles a scientific expedition, among them Andy Ostergaard, Dr. Joan Lindsey, Dr. Max A. Bauer, Dr. James Paxton and Dr. George Coleman, and brings along the Cyclotram, an atomic-powered machine that bores through rock. Government funding falls through, and Wright Thompson, an independently rich adventurer, pays for the project provided he may come along. Ostergaard and Thompson both take an interest in Lindsey, and as the machine carries the group deeper, tempers flare among those aboard.
