Plot summary
Simón Bolívar is a young Venezuelan aristocrat who was educated in Europe and lives among the colonial elite. He marries María Teresa del Toro. Soon after the couple returns to Venezuela, she dies of yellow fever. Bolívar turns away from wealth and comfort and becomes aware of the oppression his people suffer under Spanish rule. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment and by revolutionary movements in Europe, he vows to free his homeland.
