Plot summary
An unnamed UK metropolis, some time in the future. A huge explosion on New Year's Eve, known as The Catastrophe, has evacuated thousands and left a militarized Quarantine Zone fenced around the blast's epicenter, where armed units guard it so that nobody goes in or out. Jennifer Preston, a photojournalist, sets out to document the aftermath. Bizarre acts of violence break out across the city, and strange, ephemeral figures keep appearing in her pictures. Her boyfriend Jonas Flack, a government advisor, and a detective whose daughter died in the blast each have their own reasons to press the same questions, while the authorities would rather the causes stay buried.
