Plot summary
A UNESCO team studying how children develop identifies six of them, one each in China, India, Nigeria, the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom. Every child solves the same difficult brick puzzle, and all six finish it in the same time, with an intellect far beyond their years. In London, the psychologist Tom Lewellyn and the geneticist David Neville look into Paul, a boy whose mother, Diana, says no man touched her. Diana openly dislikes the child, and her account is dismissed as hysteria. The six children are brought together in London to be studied as a group.
