Plot summary
Lenny, Meg and Babe Magrath grew up in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, raised by Old Granddaddy after their mother took her own life. Lenny stayed in the family home to care for him, Babe married the wealthy Zackery Botrelle, and Meg left for Los Angeles to sing, ending her relationship with Doc Porter. On Lenny's birthday the three sisters come together again because Babe has shot and badly wounded Zackery with a pistol. Babe is released from the county jail into her sisters' care. Lenny fears what will become of her, and Meg assumes she must have had a reason. Barnette Lloyd, the attorney hired to represent Babe, comes to the house to talk about her defense.
