Plot summary
Victor Grandison, whose radio program dramatizes true crimes, has lost his secretary, Roslyn Wright, in a death the police call a suicide. A week later his niece Althea Keane throws him a surprise birthday party at his home, where her husband Oliver drinks heavily; Oliver was engaged to Grandison's wealthy ward, Matilda Frazier, before Althea married him. Matilda is believed drowned in a ship sinking on her way to Portugal. A stranger named Steven Howard arrives, saying he was her husband. Homicide detective Richard Donovan stays after the party with a file on a hatchet murder. With Matilda's estate to be settled, Grandison asks Donovan to look into Steven's story.

- Dana Andrews was set to star until, two weeks after Claude Rains reported to work, he left the production dissatisfied with the size of his part compared to Rains'; Curtiz refused to make changes, and Michael North replaced him.
- Michael North, Andrews's replacement, got an "introducing" credit although he had been appearing in films for years; Curtiz renamed him from Ted North Jr. because that name "appeared too much like a cowboy," and North had acted in the 1930s under his father's name, Ted North.
- Before Claude Rains was cast, Robert Alda was reported to be the film's star in September 1945 and Humphrey Bogart was reported as "pencilled in to head the cast" in October 1946; a column noted Warners sought Rains instead of Bogart.
- Curtiz signed Constance Bennett and Donald Crisp for two major supporting roles, but Crisp never appeared in the finished film.
