Hugh Beaumont
Biography
Hugh Beaumont was an American actor who began in show business in 1931, performing in theaters, nightclubs, and radio before he started acting in motion pictures in 1940. He appeared in more than three dozen films, often in small or uncredited parts, and frequently worked with William Bendix. Both actors appeared in The Blue Dahlia (1946), a film noir in which they played friends of Alan Ladd's character. In 1946 and 1947 Beaumont starred in five low-budget crime films as the private detective Michael Shayne, taking over from Lloyd Nolan. He also appeared in The Mole People (1956). On television he narrated Racket Squad from 1951 to 1953. In 1957 he replaced Max Showalter as Ward Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver, played the role until 1963, and directed some episodes. Later he acted in community theater and guest-starred on television. In 2014, a TV Guide list of great television fathers placed his Ward Cleaver at number 28.
