Plot summary
Frankie Kelly has served ten years in a New Orleans prison, taking the fall for a crime he and his younger brother James committed together. While Frankie was inside, James found steady work as a mechanic and began courting Emily, a police dispatcher. Now Frankie is out, with no money and nowhere to go, and he brings James around his friends Sugar and Ray, who protected him in prison. Sugar and Ray plan a bank robbery with the gangster Spoonie and want James involved. James refuses, but Ray presses him by threatening Frankie, and Frankie owes the pair for his prison years, so he cannot simply walk away.
