Plot summary

In a Detroit movie theater, Paul is reading about the Roanoke settlers who vanished centuries before when the house lights die and the people around him are gone, their clothing all that remains. Only someone carrying a light seems able to stay. Rosemary searches a hospital and calls for her son Manny. Luke Ryder, a television reporter, wakes to dead power, deserted downtown streets and an empty station. Three days on, with no daylight, Luke and a boy named James hold out in a bar kept running by a generator, and James expects his mother back from a nearby church. Rosemary arrives there too, still asking after Manny.
