Plot summary
Deer season is about to open in Michigan, and Reuben Soady, 43, comes to the family's camp with his father Albert, his brother Remnar and Jimmer Negamanee from Menominee. Reuben has never shot a buck. If the season passes without one, he will be the oldest Soady on record to have failed at it, a taboo that leaves people in the community believing he is jinxed. Reuben breaks with tradition at the camp and takes the advice of his Native American wife, Wolf Moon Dance. She offers him spiritual remedies: a drink containing moose testicles, and porcupine urine worn as a scent to keep evil spirits away and draw his prey to him.
