Plot summary
Ethel Saxon goes on trial for shooting her husband, and her defense is that she fired under extreme emotional pressure, unable to accept that he was leaving her. Onlookers think she may be let off, since the shooting looks like a crime of passion. Edward Weldon, the jury foreman, asks whether she picked up the money her husband had collected to leave with, and her answer leads him and the jury to find the crime premeditated. She is convicted and sentenced to death. In the weeks that follow, Weldon's daughter Stella, who met Gar Boni at the trial, has fallen in love with him; Gar tells his friends he is leaving town and that she is too serious for his kind of romance.
