Plot summary
Gregory Vance, a former Harvard professor, is a widower with two children, Joan and Donald, and an alcoholic in a small city. He works as a night watchman, and the children recite Shakespeare and look after his reputation. After a fight between his children and some bullies, their teacher, Agnes Billow, visits and the two become friendly. With a mayoral election nearing, Iron Hat McCarthy, the city's political boss, learns that Vance is the only registered voter left in one crucial ward. Vance's wealthy in-laws also threaten to take custody of the children, and Iron Hat offers him a city post to secure his vote.
