Gary Kent
Biography
Gary Kent was an American actor, stuntman, and director who worked largely in independent and exploitation films. Born in Walla Walla, Washington, he studied journalism at the University of Washington and made his feature debut in Battle Flame (1959). In the 1960s he appeared in low-budget pictures such as The Black Klansman (1966) and The Savage Seven (1968), and he doubled Jack Nicholson in stunts on Hells Angels on Wheels (1967), The Savage Seven, and Psych-Out (1968), where he also doubled for Bruce Dern. His earliest stunt work was on Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind (1966) and The Shooting. Kent directed The Pyramid (1975) and Rainy Day Friends (1983) and wrote the 2009 memoir Shadows and Light. He retired from stunts in 2003 but kept acting in independent films, and his career inspired the Cliff Booth character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He died in 2023.
