Plot summary
In the spring of 1866, with Austrian troops occupying Venice, a performance of Il Trovatore is interrupted by a nationalist protest. Countess Livia Serpieri, married to an older aristocrat, tries to hide the part her cousin Marchese Roberto Ussoni played in arranging it. In the confusion she meets a young Austrian lieutenant, Franz Mahler, and is smitten with him. Roberto is sent into exile for his radical conduct, and Franz is the one who sent him there; Livia chooses not to dwell on it. A secret affair begins, and Livia, who has money and position, gives herself to it entirely.
