Plot summary
Nanette, Father Michael's French ward, marries John Patricia, the oldest of Widow Patricia's five boys, only hours before World War I begins. All five brothers go overseas to fight in Belgium and France, leaving the family's town in the Canadian Rockies behind. In the years that follow, a child is born to John and Nanette. When the boy is two, his young mother leaves him with his grandmother and travels to Flanders to look after children who have lost their homes in the war. There she is terrorized by Lieutenant von Eberhard, a German officer who had once been John's friend.
