Plot summary
World War I is under way. Frances Hawtree arrives at the estate of Sir Winston Chamberlain, the First Lord of the Admiralty, dressed as a nurse, with a story about the eldest Chamberlain son: she says he died in the German hospital she fled, and she has come to return his belongings. In fact she is a German agent, known as ZI, and her mission is to learn when the First American Division will cross the Atlantic. Arthur, the other Chamberlain son, falls for Frances while on leave. Valdar, the household's butler, is charmed by Frances but wary of her.
