Plot summary
Prince Nicki is the heir of a rundown noble family and commands a cavalry regiment in Vienna in 1914. At a parade before St. Stephen's Cathedral he notices Mitzi, an innkeeper's daughter who works as a harpist and whose parents expect her to marry Schani, a butcher. Schani spits and embarrasses her at the family table while she and Nicki flirt across the crowd. A gun salute frightens Nicki's horse, which injures Mitzi and sends her to a hospital; Nicki has Schani arrested. Nicki visits her at the hospital and later at the pub where she plays, and they begin going on dates. His family's financial troubles having been made known to him, a wealthy factory owner approaches Nicki about marrying his daughter Cecelia.
