Plot summary
King Richard the Lion-Hearted goes off to fight in the Crusades and leaves his brother, Prince John, as regent. In a joust the Earl of Huntingdon defeats Sir Guy of Gisbourne, then joins the king. Urged on by Sir Guy, the prince becomes a cruel, treacherous tyrant and usurps the throne. Lady Marian Fitzwalter, the earl's love, sends him word of what has happened in England. The earl asks to return, and Richard, assuming he has turned coward, denies him permission.

- A huge castle set and an entire 12th-century village of Nottingham were built at the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio in Hollywood, and some sets were designed by architect Lloyd Wright. Director Allan Dwan recalled that star Douglas Fairbanks was so overwhelmed by the scale of the sets that he considered canceling production.
