Plot summary
Sam Donovan, an insurance investigator, gets off the train in a Midwestern town west of Chicago and helps Anita Weatherby gather an armload of Christmas gifts; they ride the same bus to Cleberg and are drawn to each other. Her family waits at the stop, her father Stu, who runs the local bank, among them, and they take Donovan for a suitor and invite him to the house. Sheriff Larry Best, at his office in Marlowe County, calls the death of Roger Phillips a suicide, though no powder burns, no pistol, no bullet and no coroner's report back that up. Phillips was widely disliked, and the beneficiary of his policy, his niece Margaret Baker, and her new husband Frank will not talk to Donovan. A double-indemnity clause would pay more if the death were murder.
