Did you know?!

  1. Early training

Reiner spent ten months at Georgetown University training as a French interpreter. While there, he staged a Moliere play entirely in French, his first experience as a director.

  2. A role that slipped away

In 1958 Reiner wrote 13 episodes of Head of the Family, drawing on his own life. Sheldon Leonard saw it, did not like Reiner as the autobiographical lead, and in 1961 the series was recast and retitled The Dick Van Dyke Show.

  3. A first

Reiner's first film directing job was Enter Laughing, an adaptation of Joseph Stein's play, which was itself based on Reiner's semi-autobiographical 1958 novel.

  4. Getting ready for a role

Reiner voiced Sarmoti in Father of the Pride and said he learned the roar himself from the lions he lived beside at the Bronx Zoo from age 6 to 18.
