Plot summary
Ted Cole writes and illustrates children's books. He and his wife Marion have a young daughter, Ruth, and the family lives in a beach town on Long Island. Pictures of the couple's teenage sons, killed in a car crash, hang on the walls of the house, and Marion has been depressed since the loss. Ted and Marion spend part of the time apart, trading places between the house and a rented apartment in town. Ted's license was suspended for drunk driving, so he takes on Eddie O'Hare, an aspiring writer, as a summer assistant and driver.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Talking about her full frontal nude scene at 48, Mimi Rogers admitted it was "a little scary", but discussions with director Tod Williams about the context and filming of the scene put her at ease, since it came during an art scene rather than a sexual one.
- Kim Basinger said she was concerned about the age of her 18-year-old co-star Jon Foster during their sex scene, saying she felt protective of him, the opposite of her usual experience of working with men who were protective of her.
- The film was a box-office disappointment, grossing $6.7 million against a $7.5 million budget, with $456,876 in its opening weekend and an eventual domestic total of $3,854,624.
- Jeff Bridges was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Male but lost to Paul Giamatti for Sideways, while Tod Williams lost Best Screenplay to Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor for the same film.
- The screenplay is based on only the first third of the 1998 novel A Widow for One Year by John Irving.
