Plot summary
Corinne Walker's brother is stillborn, and in the years that follow her parents' marriage comes apart. Corinne, growing up in the early Sixties, doubts God. In her teens she meets Ethan Miller, who plays in a local rock band called The Renegades, and they marry when she is pregnant with their daughter, Abigail. On tour with Ethan's band, the bus goes into a river; Ethan pulls Abby out and comes to believe God meant them to live. The couple give themselves to a radical New Testament church, and as adults they raise Abigail and Lilly among believers who call themselves Jesus freaks, where Bible study fills the days. Pastor Bill tells the husbands that they owe their wives more attention.
