Plot summary
After auditions across the country, twelve dancers take their places at the American Ballet Academy in New York, the school attached to the American Ballet Company. Jonathan Reeves, the company's choreographer and director, tells the new students that a workshop at the end of the year will decide which three men and three women are asked to join. Jody Sawyer wins her place on dedication rather than technique, and rooms with Maureen Cummings, whose mother works at the school, and with the outspoken Eva Rodriguez. Jody befriends Charlie Sims, Erik Jones and Sergei, a Russian who misses his girlfriend. Instructor Juliette Simone singles out Jody's turnout in class, while Eva's dancing impresses the faculty and her attitude does not.
