Plot summary
Disillusioned with the Soviet system, a high-ranking KGB analyst in Moscow, Sergei Grigoriev, decides to pass the secrets of the Soviet spy networks to France, then governed by President François Mitterrand, hoping to force change at home. His intermediary is Pierre Froment, a French engineer in Moscow. The French intelligence service gives Grigoriev the codename Farewell. After the first handover of documents, Pierre tells his wife Jessica, who wants him to stop and protect their family. Grigoriev accepts neither money nor defection, asking only now and then for small gifts from Pierre's trips to France, among them a Walkman and cassette tapes for his son.
