Plot summary
James Manning, a wealthy London solicitor, is married to Anne, who is younger than he is and likes the life they lead, with a house in London and a hideaway in Buckinghamshire. Anne meets William Bule at a village cricket match; he is known as Bill, the son of a leading local family, lately back from America. Anne wants to invite their neighbors over for drinks, and James agrees without enthusiasm. That evening work keeps James late in the city, and before the party can begin a speeding car sideswipes a man riding a bicycle along a village lane. The man is the husband of Maggie, who keeps house for the Mannings. He is knocked down and dies some days afterward. Anne becomes unusually attentive to Maggie, and James cannot see why.
