Plot summary
In New York, Cameron Sparrow, a boy of eleven, lives with his mother Lindsay. A hooded stranger attacks him. Elsewhere, Dr. Seth Ember works from a wheelchair and hunts demons by entering the subconscious of the people they possess, waking the host inside the dream so the demon is driven out. His assistant Oliver warns him that demons are learning to adapt and that he may soon fail to return to his own body. Camilla, who represents the Vatican, asks Ember to take on Cameron's case and tells him the demon in the boy is one he already knows. Ember explains his method to Lindsay: he does not exorcise, he evicts. When he meets Cameron, the demon inside recognizes him.
