Plot summary

Dorothy Mills, a teenager on a small Irish island, is accused of trying to strangle the baby she was babysitting. Jane Morton, a psychiatrist from Dublin who is mourning her husband and son, is sent from the mainland to assess her. Dorothy, in the care of Eileen McMahon, insists she never touched the child, and the islanders make their hostility to Jane's inquiry plain. The locals she approaches for answers are nervous about her presence. Shortly after leaving the ferry, an orange car carrying three teenagers causes an accident and Jane's car goes into the sea; she survives. She then sits down with Dorothy for a series of interviews.
