Plot summary
John Baggs Jr. serves in the U.S. Navy and has returned from Vietnam. A pilonidal cyst sends him to the medical facility at a base in Seattle. His test results arrive too late, his ship sails without him, and he waits for a new assignment on a Cinderella liberty pass, which lets him leave the base until midnight curfew. When the base misplaces his records, he cannot be reassigned and gets no pay. On his first night out he shoots pool against Maggie, who hustles sailors, then goes to her apartment, where her young son Doug lives.
