Albert Conti

Biography

Albert Conti was an Austrian-American actor who arrived in the United States in 1919 and spent the following two decades playing character parts in Hollywood. Born in Gorizia, he had trained in law and natural science before the war, and after emigrating he worked at a string of manual jobs. While employed in the oil fields of California, he responded to an open call from director Erich von Stroheim, who wanted an Austrian officer as technical advisor for Merry-Go-Round (1923), and that work led him into film. Conti went on to take dignified supporting parts in silent and sound pictures, among them Josef von Sternberg's Morocco (1930), the Laurel and Hardy comedy Slipping Wives (1927) and the silent Dry Martini (1928). He made his final film in 1942, then worked in the MGM wardrobe department until he retired in 1962. He died in 1967.
