Plot summary
At the Stegg Academy in Paris, Auguste A. Topaze teaches chemistry, and he loses the post when he refuses the Baroness de La Tour-La Tour's demand to change her son Charlemagne's grades. That same day he calls on Coco, the mistress of Baron Philippe de La Tour-La Tour, who is seeking a tutor for Alphonse, her sister's son. The baron runs the La Tour Chemical Works, hears Topaze out and takes him on as the scientific face of a curative water sold under his name. At a cafe the baron calls Coco Madame Topaze to head off a scene with his wife, and Coco tells the professor what she really is to the baron.
