Plot summary
Rey Hightower dropped out of college to raise his ten-year-old half-brother, Oliver, after their mother was sent to prison on drug charges six years earlier. Rey's father had left long before that, and Rey works at a fuel station in his hometown. Lola, the boys' mother, is out of prison now and determined to rebuild the family she left behind, but Rey wants nothing to do with her. He packs up Oliver and leaves their desert home, driving toward the California coast. Lola turns to Bo, her ex-husband, for help finding the boys, and the two of them set out after Rey and Oliver.
