Plot summary
Chloe Sherman lives in Pasco with her mother, Diane. Her legs are paralyzed, and she uses a wheelchair; she also has asthma, diabetes, arrhythmia and hemochromatosis, takes several medications each day, and is taught at home rather than at school. She fills her free time building electronics and circuit boards, and she hopes to go to college, though none of the schools she applied to has replied. One morning she digs through the groceries looking for chocolate and comes upon a pill bottle holding green pills. It carries Diane's name, and a second label, with her own name on it, has been stuck over the first. Chloe tries to find out what the drug is, but there is no internet connection in the house.
