John Karlsen
Biography
John Karlsen was a New Zealander who worked mainly in the Italian film industry as an actor and voice artist. Between 1958 and 2003 he amassed more than 80 film and television credits. He grew up in Australia and Wellington, New Zealand, studied drama in Britain and then set up his own repertory company. In the 1950s he moved to Rome, where he ran the Crypt Theatre. His film debut came in 1958 with a Mamie Van Doren comedy, The Beautiful Legs of Sabrina. Directors such as Federico Fellini cast him, and he also worked in English-language dubbing. He also appeared in Hollywood films made in Italy, including The Sin Eater (2003) and The Black Stallion (1979). In Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) he took the small but memorable part of the Evil Duke. He retired to New Zealand after his last role, in Pupi Avati's The Hideout (2007).
