Plot summary
In Sicily, Francesca Cimarosa, a young peasant girl, catches the eye of Vito Juvara, a promising mafioso. Pleased by his attention, she agrees to wed him. The happiness does not last. Francesca discovers that Vito is violent, jealous and possessive, and that he expects complete and abject obedience from her. After she witnesses a mob killing, she rebels against the impending marriage. Refusing to go through with it, she finds herself the target of a mafia hit man.

- Because Ornella Muti was only fourteen when she played Francesca Cimarosa — the role that was her film debut — the production fell under strict film regulation, one rule of which banned any on-screen depiction of rape.
- Damiano Damiani and his co-writers chose to make the screenplay differ in several ways from the real-life kidnapping, rape and prosecution behind it. Scholar Niamh Cullen notes that the film's Francesca behaved like a 1960s-70s feminist, while the real Franca had reportedly accepted the forced marriage as inevitable.
