Plot summary
Walter Mancini, a reporter who drinks heavily, is towing a trailer through northern California with his wife Eve. Quarrels about his drinking and about Eve's suspected infidelity have worn their marriage down. At a campground Walter brawls with other campers and breaks his left hand, leaving Eve at the wheel the next day. On an empty two-lane road they stop for a motorist whose car has quit on him. He calls himself Adam Konitz and first asks only for a ride to a gas station to telephone for a tow truck. When they object to carrying him further, he produces a gun, says he has escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is wanted for a bank robbery that brought him two million dollars, then seizes them and orders Eve to drive for Mexico.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hitch Hike (1977)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- A few days before shooting began, Franco Nero broke his arm on the set of the Spaghetti Western Keoma while throwing a punch at a misbehaving horse; the script was rewritten so his character hurts his hand and Corinne Cléry's character drives the car.
- Franco Nero joined the film because director Pasquale Festa Campanile, who wished to work with him, called while Nero was in Germany shooting 21 Hours at Munich, and Nero suggested David Hess, who wanted to work in Italy, as the second male lead.
- The opening credits claim the film is based on a novel called The Violence and the Fury by Peter Kane, but the attribution is likely fictional, as no book by any such author is known to exist.
- Because filming in the United States would have been too expensive, the film was shot in the mountains of the Gran Sasso in central Italy, around L'Aquila and Crognaleto; the area resembled Northern California, and American-style gas stations and signs were built.
