Annie Girardot

Biography

Annie Girardot was an actress who worked in French and Italian cinema, appearing in nearly 150 films across five decades. Born in 1931, she trained to be a midwife, then won a place at the Conservatoire de la rue Blanche in Paris, leaving in 1954 with a prize for modern and classical comedy and spending 1954 to 1957 as a resident actor at the Comédie Française. Her film debut came in 1955 with Treize à table, and Jean Cocteau admired her performance in his 1956 play La Machine à écrire. Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers (1960) brought public attention. She won the Volpi Cup for best actress for Three Rooms in Manhattan at the 1965 Venice Film Festival, and became a box-office draw in France with films such as Love Is a Funny Thing (1969). A three-time César winner, twice a Molière winner and a BAFTA nominee, she had a comeback in Claude Lelouch's Les Misérables (1995).
