Plot summary
A former outlaw and Civil War veteran, Martin Benson clears his name by working undercover for the army in 1870 Texas, moving against a ring that supplies firearms and whiskey to Indians. Three of the gang have been caught and executed without revealing their leader. Benson wants to stop; the captain who runs him wants that name, and another agent, Tony Guy, is already inside the outfit. While Benson is away, the gang rides to the Benson farm to draw him out; the younger siblings, back from town, find their mother and father dead, their sister Jenny mute after being raped, and a wounded stranger in the shed. They carry him to a cave to keep him alive until he talks.
