Plot summary
Jack Frost comes to on a frozen pond with no memory of his life, and no one in the mortal world can see or hear him. Three hundred years later, Nicholas St. North hears from the Man in the Moon that Pitch Black is threatening the world's children with nightmares, and calls E. Aster Bunnymund, Sanderson Mansnoozie and Toothiana to his side. The Guardians learn that Jack has been chosen to join them, and Bunny carries him to the North Pole, where North explains that every Guardian fosters something in children. Jack has no idea what his own center is, and refuses the call. When Pitch raids Toothiana's palace and takes her fairies and all the teeth, the Guardians set out to gather teeth from children themselves.

- Leonardo DiCaprio was announced to make his animated feature film debut as the lead character, Jack Frost, of the film then tentatively titled The Guardians, but he would later leave the project for undisclosed reasons.
- Joyce continued to work on the film only as an executive producer, while Ramsey took the helm solo as a full-time director, making him the first African American to direct a big-budget CG animated film and leaving the production with a single director rather than two.
- While the film grossed more than double its $145 million budget, it did not turn a profit for DreamWorks Animation due to its high distribution and marketing costs, forcing an $87 million write-down; combined with other factors, the studio announced 350 layoffs in February 2013.
- The idea for the Guardians came from Joyce's daughter, who asked him if he thought Santa Claus had ever met the Easter Bunny.
- DreamWorks Animation developed OpenVDB, a more efficient tool and format for manipulating and storing volume data like smoke; it had already been used on Puss in Boots and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and was released in August 2012 for free as an open-source project.
