Ernst Deutsch
Biography
Ernst Deutsch was a Prague-born Czech-Austrian actor who worked on stage and in film. He made his stage debut in Vienna in 1914 and became known in Germany's Expressionist theater movement, especially for playing the title role in Hasenclever's The Son. From 1917 he performed at Berlin's Volksbühne and took roles in numerous silent films, among them The Golem: How He Came into the World (1920) as Famulus. He left Germany in 1933 and emigrated to the United States, where Hollywood cast him mostly as Nazis and German officers. He played Baron Kurtz in The Third Man (1949). His performance in The Trial (1948) won him the Best Actor Award at the Venice International Film Festival. After the war he joined Vienna's Burgtheater and drew critical praise as Nathan the Wise and Shylock. In 1964 he received an Honorary Deutscher Filmpreis.
