Plot summary
Erik Kernan Jr. covers sports for The Denver Times, where his editor Ralph Metz dismisses his articles as bland. Kernan's late father was a famous sportscaster, and he is separated from his wife Joyce, a colleague at the paper, while he worries about losing touch with their son Teddy. After covering a boxing match at the Denver Coliseum, Kernan steps in when three young men harass an elderly homeless man. The man calls himself Champ and says he boxed professionally. Kernan comes to believe Champ is Bob Satterfield, a former heavyweight contender. Champ resists a profile, saying his memories hurt too much, so Kernan asks Polly, a newspaper associate, to help him gather details of Champ's past. He also tells magazine publisher Whitley that he has a story about Satterfield.
