Plot summary
A solar flare strikes, and the lights go out across the whole planet with no sign they will come back. Cities and towns lose power, and order begins to fray. President Marshall Erwin and the top officials around him are pulled away to a Cold War bunker, where they try to agree on a way to restore what was lost. In a middle-class suburb, the residents do not wait for an answer. Schoolteachers and businessmen dig in, plant gardens and arm themselves, turning their streets into something like a village that can feed and defend itself. The success of that arrangement draws notice from people nearby who have less, and the subdivisions begin to square off against one another.
