Plot summary
Rising seas have left Miami partly flooded and pushed most of the city's work into the night. Nick Bannister and Emily "Watts" Sanders run a service that lets clients relive their own memories. One morning Mae comes in and asks them to find a set of lost keys. Watching her recollections, Nick sees a nightclub singer who performs his favorite song, and the two of them begin a relationship. Months later Mae disappears, and Nick keeps using the machine to replay the time they had together; Watts confronts him about it. Nick and Watts also retrieve memories for the state prosecution, and one of those sessions brings Mae back into his view.
