Plot summary
Tova Sullivan, a widow, works nights as a janitor at the aquarium in Sowell Bay, Washington, though she has been encouraged to retire. Her son Erik died years ago and her husband has died more recently, and she has grown withdrawn from her daily life. At work she keeps company with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus. When Marcellus attempts an escape, Tova tracks him and, while returning him to his tank, slips and injures her ankle. Cameron Cassmore, an aspiring musician stranded in town, is hired to cover her shifts.
