Plot summary
As a girl, Sonja loses her homeland of Hyrkania to invaders and flees into the forest, separated from her tribe. She prays to the forest goddess Ashera and looks for other Hyrkanians. Years later, hunters arrive to take animals for their horns, and Sonja trails them. The captured creatures are meant for gladiator games in honor of Emperor Dragan, she learns. Dragan comes to see the beasts himself, and Sonja strikes the hunters to punish their cruelty. Soldiers find her, General Karlak knocks her unconscious, and Dragan orders her sent to his capital to fight in the games. Dragan holds half of a Hyrkanian book of ancient knowledge that powers his capital and wants the other half; he believes her map of the uncharted forest will lead his forces to the exiled Hyrkanians who keep it.

- Bryan Singer was confirmed to direct Red Sonja in October 2018, but after multiple men accused him of sexual assault in January 2019, Millennium Films pulled the film from its slate. Producer Avi Lerner dropped Singer that March when he could not secure a domestic distributor.
- In 2008, Robert Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios were working on a Red Sonja film that would have starred Rose McGowan in the title role. That version was scrapped by 2009, and rights holders Nu Image instead planned a film to be directed by Simon West.
- Hannah John-Kamen was cast as Red Sonja in May 2021, but she and director Joey Soloway left the project in March 2022. M. J. Bassett took over as director and rewrote the screenplay Tasha Huo had written.
- Matilda Lutz began intense sword training in Bulgaria one month before shooting, because director M. J. Bassett wanted the fight scenes shot in long, extended takes.
