Plot summary
Thomas drives a statue of William Dampier into the Western Australian town of Dampier and steps into the pub, where a group of men stand over an apparently sick dog. Unable to put it down themselves, they retreat to the bar, and publican Jack Collins tells Thomas the animal is Red Dog. Miners at Hamersley Iron, which is digging iron ore nearby, relate how the dog arrived in Dampier in 1971 and befriended them all, though he belonged to no one in particular. Then John Grant, an American who drives a bus for the company, becomes his master, and John takes up with Nancy, a secretary at Hamersley Iron.
