Biography

Brad Bird is an American filmmaker and animator who began drawing and animating as a child in Kalispell, Montana, and finished his first short subject by 14. He sent that film to Walt Disney Productions, which led to an apprenticeship with the studio's Nine Old Men, and he later attended the California Institute of the Arts and worked for Disney. In the 1980s he co-wrote Batteries Not Included (1987), developed episodes of Amazing Stories, and served as a creative consultant on The Simpsons for eight seasons before directing the acclaimed but unsuccessful animated film The Iron Giant (1999). Moving to Pixar, Bird wrote and directed The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007), winning two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and earning Best Original Screenplay nominations. He then directed the live-action Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol (2011) and Tomorrowland (2015), and returned to Pixar for Incredibles 2 (2018), which became one of the highest-grossing animated films and brought another Academy Award nomination.

    With eight animation Annie Awards, Bird has won more of them than anyone else. He took Best Directing and Best Writing for The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille, plus Best Voice Acting for The Incredibles.

    Edward Hansen, the animation administrator, fired Bird because of his volatile attitude. Bird's time at Disney lasted just two years, though he earned credits on The Small One and The Fox and the Hound.
